Coaching is something that brings me great joy. I never thought I’d own a sports company where 97.5% of my incredible staff are coaches, but I’m not surprised. My first foray into coaching was in my teenage years working at Ashley’s Soccer Camp, run by the legend Ashley himself. I owe him a great deal for helping me become the guy I am today. Anyway, I picked up coaching again here and there while at Northeastern helping Glen (I also owe him a great deal for just about everything) do soccer programs here and there. Then I graduated and starting getting on with my big boy career of knocking on doors, which lead to starting my first company where I was very poor. Needing a job, Glen hooked me up with Mike who owned Viking and I became a coach. Lots of coaching growth happened while I was figuring out Viking.
I learned how to work with all the elementary and middle school aged kids by watching the masters Mike Reid, Ian, and Amerigo. I painfully learned how to interact with the 2.9-4 year olds by working enrichment (they weren’t called that back in the olden days) programs at daycare centers. I painfully learned how to work with the 2 year olds by inventing classes for my son. After 15 years of doing the Viking coaching stuff, it still feels new and fun because coaching is something that brings me great joy.
